MAMASAPANO: NOW IT CAN BE TOLD 2022

banner

PLOT:

Mamasapano: Now It Can Be Told was made by Borracho Film Production under producer-lawyer Ferdinand Topacio. The film is based on the Mamasapano clash in 2015 which led to the death of 44 members of the Philippine National Police's (PNP) Special Action Force. The film was submitted as a script for the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival but was not accepted. The film was directed by Lester Dimaranan and written by Eric Ramos. Ramos remarked that the script he did for Mamasapano was the most difficult script he had written since he "can't invent" and had to do a lot of research. The only fictional characters are those of Ritz Azul and Myrtle Sarrosa, who portray reporters from two rival networks. Mamasapano is described as an action, a war film, and a procedural.

The film is based on the board of inquiry report of the PNP and the investigation report on the incident by the Senate.

The film was already in production in 2020 with Law Fajardo as director. It was supposed to be finished by May 2020, but production was not finished on schedule. It was planned that the scene of the Mamasapano clash be shot during the dry season, but the rainy season came before it was filmed. This led to the replacement of most of the production staff, with writer Ramos being a noted holdover of the Fajardo team. Work for Mamasapano continued in January 2022. Fajardo was replaced by Dimaranan.

Mamasapano had a private test screening on August 26, 2022, at the Baguio Country Club in Baguio. It was not yet picture-locked but was 99% complete at that time. It was screened for the production team to determine what kind of tweaking the film still needed.

PLOT:

John is a hard-working office employee who maintains an aloof relationship with his wife Mary and son Austin. Frustrated after his boss Hermie passes him over for promotion in favor of a younger colleague, Vivian, John confronts Hermie and submits his resignation. While clearing his office, John is visited by Vivian who shares a kiss with him. The next day, John and Mary argue on their way to Austin's play over John's resignation and his fling with Vivian, which Mary learns from a video discreetly recorded by John's colleague Hannah. Distracted, John narrowly avoids hitting a pedestrian but loses control of their car, which crashes into a tree, killing Mary at exactly 3:00 PM.

Days later, an intoxicated John lashes out over his predicament at a portrait of Jesus Christ which Austin had named Lods before stumbling upon Jess, an electrician who is also nicknamed Lods and resembles Jesus. After learning that Mary had hired Lods to prepare the lights for his surprise birthday party, John invites him over to share a drink, during which Lods offers him a chance to go back in time, save Mary and fix his mistakes with one condition: someone has to die that day. John offers to do so and seals the deal with Jess. John then finds himself at Hermie's birthday party, during which he was passed over for promotion. Fixing his earlier mistakes, John tells Hermie of his acceptance of his sidelining, wards off Vivian's advances, and checks on Hannah before she can record them. John reconciles with his estranged father. He then goes to his son, giving him his blessing for Austin to pursue his passion as a pianist and take Mary out on a date.

The next morning, John argues with Mary after discovering her plans to enroll at a culinary school in Singapore accompanied by Austin, who was accepted in a music academy there, with Mary saying that she wants to pursue her dreams also. John, who feels that his efforts have been in vain with his family's departure, confronts Lods, who is preparing some lights in the yard. In response, Lods chastises him for being selfish and offers to let Mary die as originally intended, but John refuses. En route to Austin's play, John gives his blessing for her to go with Austin. At the moment of the accident, John avoids colliding with the tree, saving Mary.

While watching Austin’s play, John sees Lods in the audience and realizes that it is nearing 3:00 PM, the time Mary was supposed to have died. After going out and encountering Lods in a hallway, John pleads for his life to be spared, but finally accepts his fate after Lods assures him that his death would inspire Mary to become a successful restaurateur and Austin to become a renowned pianist who dedicates his performances to his name. Lods then allows him to go finish his son's play before dying. At the auditorium, John sees Austin dedicating his play to his parents. John prepares to greet him but is confused after Austin ignores him and runs towards the hall. Following him outside, he sees Austin hovering over his collapsed body, followed by Mary. John realizes that he is already dead and steps into a bright light leading to the afterlife.

At John's wake, Mary eulogizes him as Austin plays the piano in accordance with his final instructions. Years later, Mary and Austin lead successful lives and careers. After seeing off Austin, who now has his own family, an elderly Mary dances with John's spirit.

HENERAL LUNA 2015

banner

PLOT:

Towards the end of the 19th century, Spanish colonial rule over the Philippines comes to an end and the country gains its independence. Unwilling to face humiliation, Spain secretly sells the archipelago to the victorious Americans for $20,000,000 during the Treaty of Paris.

At the Barasoain Church in Malolos, during a cabinet meeting over the growing American presence in the Philippines, cabinet members Felipe Buencamino and Pedro Paterno propose to form an alliance with the Americans to avoid open conflict but this angers Generals Antonio Luna and José Alejandrino, both of whom prefer to fight the new invaders. Meanwhile, President Emilio Aguinaldo attempts to negotiate with the Americans over the control of Manila, which is still under Spanish control. They eventually learn that the Spaniards and Americans have staged a battle which ended with the complete control of Manila transferred to the latter, thereby bringing the Philippines under American control. After an incident between American and Filipino soldiers in Manila, Aguinaldo starts a brutal resistance against the Americans to protect the country's independence.

Luna and his trusted officers – Colonel Francisco “Paco” Román, Captain Eduardo Rusca, and the Bernal brothers Captain José and Major Manuel – begin an arduous campaign against the Americans, only to face some setbacks. During a battle, Luna asks for reinforcements from the Kawit battalion but their commander Pedro Janolino refuses as the order did not come from Aguinaldo himself. Infuriated, Luna brutally humiliates and demotes Janolino. Luna then declares his infamous "Article One", which states that those refusing to follow his orders shall be executed on the spot, to put insubordinate soldiers and officers under his control while mobilizing more men for the army. In another meeting, Buencamino and Paterno propose to have the country become a protectorate under American rule in an attempt to secure peace, prompting Luna to arrest them as traitors. Luna's campaign is soon undermined by General Tomás Mascardo, who defies his orders. While the two generals prepare to clash in Pampanga, the Americans advance steadily, forcing the Filipino army to retreat up north alongside Aguinaldo. Distraught over the growing disunity within the Filipino army, Luna attempts to resign. Aguinaldo rejects Luna's request but he approves his other request to establish a headquarters in the north where they can launch a guerilla campaign against the Americans.

Not long after, Luna is summoned to the President's headquarters in Cabanatuan after receiving news that he has been given a position in the President's new cabinet. Despite suspicions from his officers, Luna goes with Rusca and Román beside him. Upon arrival, he discovers that Aguinaldo has left, with Buencamino, who has been released, the only cabinet member remaining. After a heated argument with Buencamino, Luna encounters Janolino and his men who brutally murder him. Román is also killed in his failed attempt to save his commander while a wounded Rusca surrenders. In the aftermath, most of Luna's officers are arrested while some are tortured and killed, including the Bernal brothers. Meanwhile, Aguinaldo requests Luna and Román be buried with full military honors while the killers are never arrested and tried for their crimes. Several decades after the war, Aguinaldo denies his involvement in Luna's assassination, calling him his most brilliant and capable general.

In a mid-credits scene, General Gregorio del Pilar prepares to cover Aguinaldo's retreat to the north. He inspects Luna's remaining men and orders his aide, Colonel Vicente Enríquez, to select 60 of them for the coming battle.

GOYO: ANG BATANG HENERAL 2018

banner

PLOT:

Following the assassination of General Antonio Luna, Gregorio "Goyo" del Pilar, a young and brash brigadier general, has been tasked by President Emilio Aguinaldo to hunt down Luna's loyalists who have been charged with treason. One such soldier, Major Manuel Bernal, is captured at the house of Mariano Nable José in Dagupan. Bernal is tortured into rejoining the army, but defiantly refuses and insults Goyo, calling him a "dog" for his loyalty to Aguinaldo; Bernal is then executed. Aguinaldo then promotes Goyo to major general of Pangasinan. With a relative decrease in hostilities, Goyo, along with his older brother Julian, his friend Colonel Vicente Enriquez, and photographer Joven Hernando, spends the entire summer in Dagupan attending festivals and courting Remedios, Mariano's daughter.

Meanwhile, Aguinaldo approaches former prime minister Apolinario Mabini and offers him to rejoin the government as chief justice, which he reluctantly accepts (later in the film, the appointment never materialized). When Mabini asks Aguinaldo about Luna's death, he deflects the question. Elsewhere, General José Alejandrino, Luna's former ally spared from the purge, goes to Manila to negotiate with the American Generals Elwell Stephen Otis and Arthur MacArthur Jr. who both refuse to recognize the sovereignty of the First Philippine Republic unless the Filipinos surrender. The negotiations failed and the war intensified. Unable to launch a counterattack, Aguinaldo orders the army to retreat to the Cordillera Range with Goyo commanding the vanguard. During the long and exhausting march through the mountains, the army is plagued by persistent American attacks, internal tensions from Luna's old unit, as well as hunger and disease. Goyo is further pressured when Aguinaldo's mother and son are captured.

The army arrives at Mount Tirad, where Goyo devises a delaying strategy that will give Aguinaldo and the rest of the army enough time to escape. Together with Luna's former soldiers, including former Luna Sharpshooter Lieutenant García, fortified trenches are dug on the slope overlooking the mountain pass. On December 2, American troops under Major Peyton C. March arrive. The Battle of Tirad Pass begins and the Americans are initially unable to penetrate the Filipino defenses. With help from a local guide, the Americans use a secret path to outflank the Filipinos. Having just overcome the PTSD he developed in earlier battles, a rejuvenated Goyo attempts to turn the tide of the battle but is suddenly shot dead by an American sniper. Learning of Goyo's death, the Filipinos' morale breaks down and they are easily overwhelmed. Joven and García's son Kiko flee but Joven falls off a cliff after encountering an American soldier. In the aftermath of the battle, the Americans strip Goyo's corpse for war trophies. Goyo is then buried on the site which is soon visited by Vicente and Lieutenant Telesforo Carrasco, who both survived the battle, and Felicidad, Goyo's former lover and Aguinaldo's younger sister.

Two years after the battle, Aguinaldo is captured by the Americans in Palanan, effectively ending the war. Held as a prisoner of war in Malacañang Palace, Aguinaldo is visited by his former aide-de-camp Manuel L. Quezon, who has surrendered to the Americans on the orders of his commander, General Tomás Mascardo. Quezon consults Aguinaldo on whether Mascardo should surrender, to which Aguinaldo replies that it is up to Mascardo to decide. Meanwhile, Mabini is also captured by the Americans and exiled to Guam where he writes down his own narrative of the war, La Revolución Filipina ('The Philippine Revolution') which notes Aguinaldo's failure as leader of the Philippines.

In a mid-credits scene, Joven is rescued by Kiko and Eduardo Rusca, Luna's former aide. Decades later, both Aguinaldo and Quezon ran for president in the 1935 election, while an older Rusca and Joven gave a mocking salute to the dismayed Aguinaldo.

PLOT:

The Abel family, composed of Francis, his wife Iris, and their sons Joshua and Lucas, flee a zombie outbreak in the city. Arriving at Francis' parents' mansion on a sugarcane plantation, Francis finds his father and a servant having committed suicide after being infected and his mother reanimated as a zombie. After killing his mother, Francis and his family settle in the house. It is later revealed that Francis is traumatized by being locked up in the basement as a child by his father. At the same time, his marriage to Iris is in trouble after he discovers that Iris has been unfaithful to him and that his elder brother Diego is Joshua's biological father.

Days later, Iris convinces Francis to find another sanctuary, but they are forced to turn back and abandon their van at a zombie-infested checkpoint. Francis leaves his family at the mansion and goes back to retrieve the van, but instead ends up with fuel for the mansion's generator. Joshua learns of a safe zone over the radio and tries to convince Francis to investigate, only for the latter to taunt him and instead teach him how to fire a gun. However, the gunshots attract a horde of zombies which besieges the family inside the house until Diego arrives and lures them away with his vehicle. The next day, the brothers try to reconcile, but Francis, who harbors resentment against Diego due to him being favored by their parents and his affair with Iris, rejects his offer to guide them to the safe zone and drives him away at gunpoint. Diego leaves Francis a map leading to the safe zone should he change his mind.

After Francis overhears Iris deducing that the zombies are weakening and dying off over time, he stages being attacked by multiple zombies outside and barricades the mansion while locking his family inside and spiraling further into paranoia. Joshua eventually finds Diego's map and confronts Francis over dinner, leading to Iris finally admitting that she wants to leave him and Francis acknowledging that Joshua is not his son. Francis produces the map but burns it in front of Iris, who storms off. Later that night, a wounded soldier named Corcuera seeks shelter at the mansion and confirms that there are now fewer zombies outside. He adds that he was guided to the mansion by Diego, who was killed by the zombies.

The next day, Joshua, fed up with his father's actions, leaves the mansion. Upon discovering this, Francis goes berserk, kills the soldier with a hammer, and locks Iris and Lucas in the basement. That night, Lucas feigns getting sick to gain Francis' attention. Iris then stabs Francis and locks him in the basement while taking Lucas for their escape. Francis tries to follow but becomes immobilized by flashbacks of his father locking him up. As Iris and Lucas open the main door they are chased back inside by a reanimated Diego, who bites Lucas. Francis, hearing his family's screams, recovers his sanity and escapes the basement. Francis kills Diego but collapses into a stupor upon seeing Lucas being bitten, leaving Iris alone to amputate his infected limb. Francis then returns to the checkpoint to retrieve their van but is shot by a nervous Joshua, who mistakes Francis for a zombie due to the latter's stuttering and bloodied appearance. As Joshua begs for forgiveness, Francis acknowledges him as his son and dies, leaving Joshua to drive the van and rescue his mother and brother.

METRO MANILA 2013

PLOT:

Oscar Ramirez, a rice farmer from Banaue, Ifugao Province, relocates to Metro Manila with his family in hopes of obtaining a higher quality of life after his rice crops are no longer profitable. While searching for a job, Oscar is offered a low-cost room to rent. However, it is revealed to be a scam as the next day his family is evicted by the police from the apartment building for squatting. The family moves into a vacant shanty house in the slums of Tondo, which is rife with criminal activity, while Oscar secures a job as a security officer for Manila Armored Couriers after the other guards discover his military background.

On Oscar's first day and night at work with his partner, Ong, the two exchange stories; Ong lost his previous partner during a failed robbery six months prior, and Oscar once worked in a silk factory with Alfred Santos, who was forced into armed robbery on a passenger airline, after losing his father and his family's silk factory to a rival company, to which he felt responsible for failing to stand up with his colleague, who ultimately perished after jumping off the plane.

Concerned about Oscar residing in Tondo, Ong offers Oscar a spare apartment unit in Makati for his family to live in. Meanwhile, Mai lands a job as a bar hostess at a nightclub in Makati. While undergoing the mandatory physical checkup, she is revealed to be pregnant. When she fails to make her drink quota and her pregnancy becomes more evident, her boss proposes to have nine-year-old Angel work for special clients.

During a routine job, after delivering their handouts to a rapper who happens to be a drug dealer, the duo have a tense discussion about corruption. When Ong pulls over ostensibly for a toilet break, Oscar suddenly sees a black Honda Civic, which had been stalking them on the first day, pullover with a group of men heading toward Ong's direction. Concerned, he exits the armored van and follows the gang on foot to save Ong, only to discover that they are in cahoots with Ong.

Ong reveals to Oscar that he took one of the security boxes with him after the failed robbery, and he is plotting with the gang to have the box opened by staging a robbery and having himself "debriefed" in the company's processing center while Oscar makes an imprint of the key in another room, to which he would use to unlock the box himself. He also blackmails Oscar into participating, threatening to frame him as the man who hid the security box in the apartment under their own name. The plan goes wrong as Ong realizes that the man in front of him is not part of the gang but the man who escaped when his former partner was killed; the man promptly kills Ong and Oscar is then given the grievous task of "postman", having to deliver Ong's personal effects and severance pay to his wife, Dora.

Upon learning that Ong's wife is aware of the security box, Oscar races back home and finds it under the floor. He and Mai face the dilemma of what to do with the box as she tells him it was a mistake for them to move to the city. One night, after a delivery job, Oscar sneaks into the processing center and takes an imprint of the key while stealing another one; he is quickly caught on the security camera and is shot and killed. Misled by the different keys Oscar stole, the company rushes armed men to the address of the drug dealer client while JJ, Oscar's new partner, becomes the "postman" to deliver Oscar's personal effects to Mai. She notices a locket that Oscar had stolen from a shop earlier that morning; upon opening it, she discovers a clay imprint of the key to the security box. After getting the key duplicated, she leaves the city with her children by bus, with a rucksack full of money that sits between her feet.

CORAZON: ANG UNANG ASWANG 2012

banner

PLOT:

In the 1950s, Corazon, a woman rumored to have been a prostitute during the Second World War, struggles to conceive a child with her devoted husband Daniel while being shunned by neighbors in the village of Magdalena. She becomes pregnant after following advice from a faith healer but gives birth to a stillborn baby, shattering her religious faith, driving her insane, and setting her off on a vicious killing spree of village children at night, starting with her devouring the remains of her child. She vanishes into the forest to Daniel's anguish and becomes feral, developing enhanced physical abilities.

After Corazon is identified and wounded by one of the villagers after a failed attack, they confront Daniel and demand that he find Corazon. Daniel refuses to believe his wife's involvement, admitting to his friend Naldo that he once saw their abusive landlord Matias, and his henchmen on their way to kill a fellow villager similarly. Corazon later attacks Nene, a girl who had befriended her, but lets her go when the latter reminds her of her past. Recovering part of her humanity, she despairs of her state and that of Daniel, whom she discreetly approaches at times.

As the villagers prepare to rise against Matias, Corazon, attracted by the crying sounds of Matias' daughter Lisa, breaks into his house and kills her. Distraught, Matias shoots Corazon as she escapes and runs into the village carrying her dead child, convincing everyone of Corazon's culpability. Matias, his men, and the villagers accost Daniel and burn down his house. In retaliation, Daniel kills Matias before fleeing, while a wounded Corazon is spotted by the villagers and also flees. The couple runs into each other in the forest. Corazon tells Daniel to leave, citing her condition, but Daniel professes her continued love, sharing a kiss before she flees. Naldo confronts Daniel for his refusal to capture Corazon but lets him go to reunite with her as they escape into the woods. Naldo narrates that both Corazon, now referred to as an aswang, and Daniel were never seen again, but are believed to be lurking around while lamenting how they were driven into their predicament by the inhumanity of the times.
